Neighbor Is Arrested In Pipe-Beating Death

Union City -- A man who was beaten with a metal pipe has died, and a neighbor was arrested on suspicion of murder, authorities said yesterday.

Ronald Laponte, 62, of Union City died about 8 p.m. Wednesday at a residential care facility, according to the Alameda County coroner's office.

According to police, Laponte was hit in the head with a homemade club on Sept. 20. Officers arrested Lloyd Greenwood, 22, of Union City, who told authorities that he intervened in a dispute between Laponte and several teenagers.
