Frank B. Maita
November 6, 1927 - December 20, 2016

Frank Basil Maita, a longtime resident of Alamo, California, passed away on December 20, 2016 surrounded by his family.

He was born November 6, 1927 in Oakland, California to Basil and Vita Maita. Frank grew up in Oakland, CA and graduated from Oakland High in 1946 [sic]. He attended the City College of San Francisco and enrolled in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program. He specialized in the culinary arts and his love of cooking was to remain an important part of his life. By the time he was 21, he owned delicatessens in San Leandro and the Montclair District of Oakland. He served in the Coast Guard during the Korean War as a Culinary Specialist and spent some of his service on Coast Guard Island in Alameda, CA.

After his service was completed, he used the GI bill to take flying lessons that would become a passion for him. He then became co-owner with his brother, Joe, of the Golden West Restaurant on Telegraph Ave. in Oakland. In 1976, they moved their business to Pleasant Hill, CA and established Maita Bros. They produced food products under the Golden West and Garibaldi Tamale brand. After 25 years in business and the death of his brother, Frank sold the business in 2000 and retired.

Frank enjoyed a number of passions, most notably playing golf with the group known as "The Bandits" at Round Hill CC. He was also very proud of the homes he had built in the East Bay. His favorite was his last, the home in Alamo where he had lived the past 31 years.

In 1989, Frank married the love of his life, Marion. They enjoyed good food, travel, playing golf and were blessed with a large circle of friends at Round Hill CC. Their marriage also meant that Frank became part of the Tachiera family. Many Maita and Tachiera family gatherings took place at the home on the hill in Alamo. Family was important to Frank and all of his family was blessed to have Frank in their lives.

Frank is survived by his wife, Marion, his daughters, Francine and Teresa, Frank's sister, Frances, his grandchildren, Jesse, Crystal, Nicole, Tori and Jordan, and great grandchild, Skylar, along with Teresa's husband, Henry, and Crystal's husband, Nick. His first wife, Olga, his brother, Joe, and his son-in-law, Tim, preceded him in death. The 28 members of the Tachiera family also mourn his loss and miss him greatly.

The family would like to thank the staff at Manor Care in Walnut Creek for the care they provided Frank in his last few years.

A viewing and rosary will be held on Monday, December 26, 2016 at 7pm at Hull's Funeral Home at 1139 Saranap Avenue in Walnut Creek. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville. Frank will be laid to rest at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette, CA.
