Roger Holmes Cinnamond, beloved husband, father and teacher, passed away quickly on February 26, at home with his wife Jane by his side. He was 83 years old. Roger dedicated his life to teaching and inspiring others. He was known as a light-hearted, gregarious person who genuinely loved people and was a keen observer of character. He had a special ability to lift ones' spirits and was dearly loved.

Roger was born in San Mateo, CA, and grew up in Burlingame and Oakland, CA. He completed a BA in Education at Humboldt State College in 1960, and went on to fulfill a Master's Degree in Art from Stanford University in 1965. Roger subsequently took a teaching position at the College of the Redwoods where he taught art history, graphic design, photography, drawing and creative workshops for 23 years, retiring in 1988. A creative mentor and trusted advisor, Roger influenced the lives and careers of numerous art studentss, many who have gone on to successful teaching and art careers. Prior to College of the Redwoods, Roger taught Art at Arcata High School and developed the Art program for the opening of McKinleyville High School.

After retiring Roger still taught part time at College of the Redwoods branch campuses and Humboldt State University, heading up the teacher training program for aspiring high school art teachers. In addition to teaching Roger pursued his own work on large-scale canvases, collage formats, and serigraph prints. He participated in art shows at local venues and produced various local commissioned works. He never lost his enthusiasm for the creative process.

Roger married Jane in 1958. Their son Scott was born in 1962 and their daughter Julie in 1965. The family lived in Arcata on Fickle Hill and given the teaching schedule, spent many long summer vacations on the beautiful Smith River and elsewhere in northern CA. Roger and Jane were married 54 years and were practitioners of meditation for 43 years. Although not a practitioner of any organized religion, he believed his life was divinely guided. Roger loved reading, doing artwork, writing fiction and spending time with his family.

Roger is survived by his loving wife, Jane, his sister-in-law, Lois Cinnamond of Marysville, CA; his son, Scott, daughter-in-law, Sukanya, their children, Westin, and Sonya, of Prescott, AZ; his daughter Julie Hall, son-in-law Greg, and their children, Braeden and Garrett, of Freshwater. There will be a private family gathering to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Redwood Libraries, PO Box 188, Eureka, CA 95502-0188.
