Bernice Hunn

A San Francisco Bay Area native, Bernice was the oldest daughter of Andrew and Anna Hayes. Her younger sister Elaine (Hayes) Tippett survives her. Bernice graduated from Oakland High School, the Highland Hospital Nursing Program and the University of California, Berkeley in 1948. She later completed a Master's Degree in Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco.

While attending U.C. Berkeley, Bernice met Richard (Dick) Chapman Hunn, of nearby Richmond, California and they were married in 1945. Their marriage continued for over 61 years, ending with Dick's passing in 2006. Bernice pursued her health services career first with the Contra Costa County Public Health Department and later transitioning to health education as the Director of the Contra Costa College Nursing Department for nearly twenty years.

Bernice and Dick enjoyed a very full retirement. Bernice was an active volunteer with the Nursing Auxiliary at Doctor's Hospital in Pinole and Brookside Hospital in San Pablo. With many friends from the Richmond Schools Retired Teachers Association, Bernice and Dick visited numerous National Parks and other sites in the United States, as well as tours in Canada, Europe, and Scandinavia. One of their biggest travel adventures was a trip to New Zealand and a cruise to Tahiti.

Bernice and Dick raised four children, Kathryn H. Freschi (spouse Bill) of Kentfield, California, Susan H. Garritson (spouse Bruce) of Santa Rosa, California, Richard C. Hunn Jr. (spouse Helen) of Sacramento, California, and David A. Hunn (spouse Jocelyn) of Arlington, Virginia. Bernice was especially proud and grateful that all four of her children were graduates of the University of California. Bernice was a very loving grandmother "Mimi" to Gina (Freschi) Nellesen (spouse David) of Menlo Park, California, William Freschi of Napa, California, Paul Garritson (spouse Cassie) of Portland, Oregon, James Garritson of Portland, Oregon, Allison Hunn of Berkeley, California and Claire Hunn of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bernice was also thrilled to be a great grandmother of Annika and Andrew Nellesen and Colin Garritson.

Bernice's family extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to several extraordinary caregivers during her final years, most significantly Sia Lavulavu and family (Samuel and Smiley), in addition to Milika Singalu, Mary Kivalu, Mele Akoteo and Cathy Kalahele Their loving care and dedication to Bernice and our family is a testament to human kindness and compassion and will be long remembered.

Memorial services and burial for Bernice will be private. Memorial gifts can be made to the Hospice of the East Bay. Her family encourages everyone who knew and loved Bernice to pay a kindness forward in her memory.
