LEONARD N. HARRINGTON November 3, 1923 - February 14, 2014 THERESA K. HARRINGTON May 3, 1927 - February 22, 2008 Leonard departed this world on February 14, to join his sweetheart Theresa for their eternal dance together. Born in Alameda, California, to Rose Alice Condon and Francis Harrington, Leonard grew up in the Bay area enjoying many activities. One of his most memorable was as a competitive swimmer in his early years, having swam in competitions to the Golden Gate Bridge.
After graduating from Oakland High School, Leonard served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a Sonar Operator during World War 11, later rising to the rank of Ensign when recalled to the Korean War.
Leonard was extremely proud to be a University of California, Berkeley graduate (1949 - Go Bears!). It was there he found his beloved Theresa in the shadow of Cal's Campanile. They would go on to wed in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1951, remaining together for over 56 years, until her passing in 2008, leaving a large void in his life. Their love of children was demonstrated with the adoption of three children, Susan, Kevin, and Timothy. Both were integral supporters of their children's diverse interests. From music, to drama, to all manner of sports, Leonard was active and present, carrying this to his grandchildren. This included coaching roles in his sons early sports. Everyone knew when Leonard "Gramps" was at an event!
As an early social and community activist, Leonard was a strong leader and participant in the local Civil Rights movements of the 1960's and 70's. Both he and Theresa practiced what they preached. From early desegregation to working on political campaigns of minority candidates, the entire family was included in these activities. As an outspoken participant in the community - he served on numerous Self Help and Social Action committees. He carried these values through his life, always at the ready to help in whatever manner he was able.
Leonard worked as a Commodities Broker, providing supplies to Agribusiness. Eventually establishing his own business, he and Theresa developed a strong and successful partnership.... his focus was packing materials (a "bagman"). Always ready to bring a smile - their license plates were" His Bag" for Theresa and "Any BAG" for Leonard.
In his later years, Leonard found his nitche [sic] as a volunteer. At Centennial Elementary School, Leonard formed a strong and lasting relationship with an exceptional first grade teacher. For over ten years he would go to her class every day to assist with reading.. So dedicated to the children, and this special teacher, Leonard followed her when she received a new teaching assignment. Even when he was no longer driving, it was essential that arrangements were made to get him to his kids! He stopped this work only when the teacher retired at age 87!
As a teenager Leonard was introduced to jazz (especially Dixieland), and was particularly fond of the Big Bands of the era. He loved listening to them at Sweets Ballroom in Oakland. Groups including Count Bassie, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman. "Not a weekend would pass without my going dancing". This love persisted to the end - even as his legs grew weaker - he would always manage to find the energy to dance. This love of dance was contagious, and very often had others up and moving. Leonard and Theresa shared this love, and were able to travel to numerous Jazz events throughout the country, he most favored being the Fresno Dixieland Mardi Gras. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday, dancing the entire time!
As Leonard addressed his years with Alzheimers, he did so with poise and grace, and on his terms. His memory changes did not hinder his ability share his contagious love of music and dance. Heartfelt thanks to every member of the Sunrise Senior Living staff, who provided true celebration and living in his final years. In addition, to the staff of Hinds Hospice who helped Leonard and his family, with a dignified, loving, and peaceful transition to his next journey.
Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Theresa. He is survived by his children, Susan and Joe Howard, Kevin, Tim and Gina Harrington; grandchildren, Kyle, Michael, Michelle, Lexi, Tom (Samantha), and Kathryn (Jared); and six great-grandchildren. To Celebrate and honor Leonard's life - dance with someone - everyday! A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at College Community Congregational Church, 5550 N.
