Dorothy Mary Irby

Dorothy Mary Irby, a Pleasanton resident for 48 years, passed away peacefully on June 30th. She was born to William and Marjorie Peterson in Oakland, CA. One of six children, she attended Glenview Elementary and Oakland High School, graduating in 1939 [sic].
She and her husband Charlie met in a youth group at Fruitvale Presbyterian Church. They were married 76 years, raising 4 children in Oakland and Pleasanton. Dorothy worked for many years at U.S. Plywood as a secretary, a job she loved. She was very active in P.T.A., Girl Scouts, the Oak Knoll Garden Club and served as president of the P.T.A. and the Oakland Ballet Guild. At age 50 she decided to learn to play tennis, enjoying the game, making friends and winning numerous trophies for 30+ years. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening and was a devoted and loving grandmother.
She was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Bill, Marge, George and Dick, her children Steven and Susan and her husband Charles. She is survived by her dear sister, Barbara Elkins, daughters, Carolyn Colburn and Doreen Irby, sister-in-law, Lois Peterson, son-in-laws Don Colburn and Paul Swift, granddaughters, Debra Colburn and Dawn Irby, grandsons, David Colburn (Racine), Sean Irby (Crystal), Joseph, Lukas and Adam Swift, 7 great grandchildren and 5 great- great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all.
