DORIS EVELYN GARNICK Loving aunt, devoted sister, lifelong learner, independent soul. Doris died peacefully on June 21, 2005, at the age of 82.

Doris was born in Salt Lake City on February 24, 1923, and moved with her family to Oakland as a teenager where she attended Oakland High School. She graduated with a biology major from San Jose State, and then returned to Oakland where she began her career as a hospital lab tech.

Doris loved nature, camping, and cooking. She was a knowledgeable gardener, and enjoyed caring for plants even after her move to an apartment at Salem Lutheran Home. An avid traveler, she continued to do so even after the loss of her sight in her sixties. She dealt with this disability with courage and determination learning how to read Braille, to navigate the public transit system as a blind person, and acquiring the new skills necessary to live independently. Doris provided her family and friends with a wonderful example of tenacity, grace and good humor in the face of adversity, and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her brother, Howard Garnick, sisters-in-law, Janice and Judy Garnick, 8 nieces and nephews, and 14 great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Wednesday, June 29, 2005, 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Oakland, 27th and Broadway, Oakland.
