Frances E. Bettencourt Jan 30, 1919 - May 15, 20122 Resident of Moraga Fran passed away peacefully at John Muir Hospital, Walnut Creek, with her daughter and sister by her side, at the age of 93. We have assurance that she is now in the arms of her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Fran was born in Lewiston, Idaho and was a toddler when her family moved to Oakland, CA. She attended Whittier Elem. School, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High and graduated from Oakland High in 1937 [sic]. Fran was married to Edward T. Bettencourt, August 1940. When Ed passed away in 1986, they had celebrated 46 years. Fran is survived by her daughter, Lynn Simpson and her husband, Bill, and Fran's only grandson, David; her dear sister, Phyllis Underhill and a nephew, Christopher Budge. Fran's other sister, Lela Budge Walker [Lela Mae Eaton, OHS 1942] passed away in 1989. Her work included their own newspaper delivery agency with the San Francisco Chronicle, and then as credit manager for Haas Brothers Wholesale Grocers, Oakland from 1937-1943 and 1946-1949. Fran was active in the Oakland Public Schools and held leadership positions with the PTA at her daughter's schools, and Girls Scouts of America. She was an excellent organizer and always supportive of everything involving her daughter and friends. Her church home, and second family, is First Covenant Church, Oakland, where she worshipped and served for over 50 years. In most recent years, she enjoyed Spice of Life, the Missionary Circle and the seniors group Celebrate Life. Fran had many hobbies and talents - an excellent seamstress and tailor, making dresses, suits and draperies. She was known for her lovely centerpieces and table decorations, as well as teaching and making crafts with children and adults. She enjoyed going out with friends and especially playing games and cards. Fran and Ed, loved spending time at their cabin in Plumas County, where they enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends. They especially enjoyed group travel with their trailers to various lakes and campgrounds throughout California and the Western states. Fran loved being "Nana" and spending time with her grandson, David, especially while he was growing up. She offered love and support in everything he did. She always had a sparkle about her and a "can do" attitude about everything. Her sense of humor and wit was always evident even in illness. She was often referred to as "the Ever-Ready Bunny" because she had an unsurpassed resilience for life. She was loved and admired by all who knew her and will be very, very missed. A Celebration of Fran's Life will be held on Saturday, May 19 at 1:00 p.m. at First Covenant Church, 4000 Redwood Road, Oakland, CA.
