Edwin F. Umphred Sr.

Edwin Franklin Umphred Sr., furniture store owner and Oakland resident for the past 74 years, died today in a local hospital after a short illness.

Born in New York City in 1886, Mr. Umphred was the son of F. M. Umphred, one of Oakland's pioneer furniture merchants who operated Umphred Brothers in the downtown area in the 1890s.

Mr. Umphred's father later established a furniture jobbing concern, which evolved into the present furniture company bearing the family name in San Leandro.

A long-time resident of 305 Euclid Ave., Mr. Umphred attended Cole Grammar School, Oakland High School and was graduated from the University of California in 1908.

He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Athenian Nile Club, Sequoyah Country Club and the Athens Athletic Club.

Suriving are three daughters, Mrs. John W. Davis, of La Jolla; Frances Umphred of Oakland; and Mrs. Curtis Mitchell, of Princeton N.J.; two sons, E. F. Umphred Jr., of Piedmont, and Lee Umphred of Walnut Creek; and 11 grandchildren.
