Newspaper Man Leaves Host of Friends

Veteran Newspaper men and a wide circle of friends in San Francisco were grieved yesterday to hear of the death at Paraiso hot springs Friday night of Frederick W. Stowell. Stowell, who lived in this city, was correspondent for a local paper in the Spanish-American war, and had taken part in the overthrow of Geronimo and his band of Apache Indians. He was born 53 years ago in Vermont, but was brought in childhood to this state and graduated from Oakland high school in 1876. Practically his whole life was spent in newspaper work, five years of which was in Chicago and other eastern cities, and his creditable work on San Francisco dailies made him well known here. In 1906 he married Miss Agnes S. Jones of St. Louis, who was a popular member of the younger set there. Mrs. Stowell and their children, together with his brother, Walter L. Stowell, were present at the deathbed.
